The Magic of Mack: From 2-10 to CUSA Kings
The Magic of Mack: From 2-10 to CUSA Kings
If you’re looking for a miracle worker, forget the guy turning water into wine; we’ve got Jerry Mack turning a 2-10 basement-dweller into a 10-win Conference USA Champion in a single season. In what can only be described as the ultimate "extreme makeover: football edition," Mack took the Kennesaw State Owls from "happy to be here" in their first year of FBS play to "holding the trophy" in year two.
The trophy case is getting a bit crowded, too. This week, we spotlight a man who doesn’t just rebuild programs—he launches them into orbit.
The "Turnaround" by the Numbers
Mack didn’t just win; he broke the calculators. Under his leadership, the Owls pulled off an +8 game improvement, marking the 7th largest year-over-year turnaround in college football history.
How did he do it? By winning the "cardiac games." KSU won six one-possession games in 2025—more than any other FBS program. While the rest of us were losing our hair watching, Mack was coolly orchestrating the league's top-scoring offense (34.5 ppg in CUSA play) and a defense that led the league with 31 sacks.
The Mack Attack Impact:
10-3 Record: Only the 4th time a team has hit double-digit wins in its second year of FBS reclassification.
National Recognition: 2025 Paul "Bear" Bryant National Newcomer Coach of the Year.
Elite Company: 2026 National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches College Coach of the Year.
Firsts: Led KSU to its first-ever bowl invitation (Myrtle Beach Bowl) and its first votes in the AP Top 25.
The Resume of a Winner
Jerry Mack isn’t a one-hit wonder. Before bringing the "Hoot" to Kennesaw, he was the architect behind some of the most explosive offenses in the country:
The Tennessee Years: He coached the Vols' running backs to a school-record 40 rushing touchdowns in 2022, helping them reach the No. 1 scoring offense in the nation.
The HBCU Dynasty: At North Carolina Central, he became the first coach in school history to win 15 games in his first two seasons, eventually bagging three straight MEAC titles.
The NFL Connection: He even took a "pro-hiatus" with the Jacksonville Jaguars before realizing the college sidelines missed his Midas touch.
Looking Ahead: The Six-Year Security Blanket
Kennesaw State knows a good thing when they see it. President Kathy Schwaig and AD Milton Overton didn’t waste any time, locking Mack down with a new six-year contract extension through 2031.
"Coach Mack has led with integrity, humility, and intention," said President Schwaig.
Translation: "We aren't letting this guy leave the building."
With 16 All-Conference selections returning or developing under his wing—including Co-Defensive Player of the Year Baron Hopson—the Owls aren't just a flash in the pan. They’re the new standard.
If 2025 was the "Newcomer" year, 2026 is looking like a "Takeover" year. Strap in, Owl Nation; the Mack era is just getting started, and the view from the top is pretty sweet.
