Kirby’s Chess Moves: Georgia Loads Up the Staff

If you thought Kirby Smart was going to rest on his laurels while the rest of the SEC tries to catch up, you clearly haven’t been paying attention. The Bulldogs just went on a hiring spree that looks less like a coaching search and more like a high-stakes reunion tour.

From bringing back a legendary "Dawg" to poaching one of the hottest recruiters in the state, the sidelines in Athens are officially at maximum capacity for the 2026 season.

The Prodigal Son Returns: Robert Edwards is Back

The headline of the offensive analyst group is a name that still makes defensive coordinators from the 90s break out in a cold sweat: Robert Edwards.

A two-time All-SEC back and teammate of Kirby himself back in '96, Edwards led the Dawgs in rushing in both ’96 (800 yards) and ’97 (908 yards). After a successful stint as head coach at his alma mater, Washington County High, Edwards is bringing that "old school" UGA grit back to the facility. He’s joined by Jalen Harris (formerly of UAB and Auburn) and David Whitlow (a Kennesaw State/Ole Miss vet) to round out a revamped offensive brain trust.

The "Knight" Shift: A Hometown Hero Joins the Front

On the defensive side, the big news is the hiring of Larry Knight as the new Outside Linebackers Coach. An Augusta native, Knight is basically a "Sack Specialist."

The Larry Knight Resume:

  • Sack Master: At Arkansas State in 2025, his unit tied for #1 in the Sun Belt with 39 sacks (ranking #6 nationally).

  • Recruiting Ace: While at Georgia Tech, he helped land the 2nd highest-rated class in program history.

  • NFL Pedigree: He’s logged time with both the Green Bay Packers (Bill Walsh Minority Internship) and the Atlanta Falcons.

Kirby didn't mince words: "He has produced on the field at all of his coaching stops and has also proven his worth as one of the best recruiters around."

Defensive Reinforcements

The analysts aren't just for the offense. Smart added Maurice "Mo" Smith and Gordon Redfield-Gale to the defensive room.

  • Mo Smith: A familiar face who famously followed Kirby from Alabama to Georgia in 2016, proving once again that once you’re in the Kirby circle, you’re in for life.

  • Redfield-Gale: A young riser who spent the last two seasons at USC.

The Takeaway

Kirby Smart is building a coaching staff that has more collective "Big Game" experience than most NFL teams. By blending former players like Edwards and Smith with rising tactical minds like Knight, Georgia is sending a clear message: The standard in Athens isn't just winning—it's evolving.
