**LAKE CITY, Fla. —** On Friday nights in Lake City, Florida, the lights at Columbia High School illuminate more than a football field. They shine on generations of tradition, hometown pride, and a community that has long rallied around its Fighting Tigers.

Now, that same community spirit could help transform the school's athletic facilities for years to come.

Columbia High School has been selected as one of just 40 schools nationwide competing in T-Mobile's 2026 Friday Night 5G Lights competition, putting the Tigers in contention for a **$1 million football stadium upgrade**.

But there's a catch.

The Tigers need votes, and the clock is ticking.

**Voting for the divisional round ends Sunday, October 25.**

For Columbia, this isn't simply about winning a contest. It's about investing in student-athletes, preserving a community landmark, and creating opportunities that extend well beyond the football field.

## A Small-Town Program With Big-Time Dreams

Columbia High School is one of only two Florida schools selected for this year's national Top 40, joining Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola.

The finalists were chosen from nearly 2,500 schools nationwide, making Columbia's selection an accomplishment in itself.

The Tigers have already secured $25,000 as national finalists. Now, they're competing against nine other schools in T-Mobile's South Division for an opportunity to advance to the final four.

The stakes are significant.

Each of the four divisional champions will receive $250,000, a Gronk Fitness gym upgrade valued at $90,000, and a $5,000 student leadership award.

Those four schools will then compete for the ultimate prize: a $1 million home-field upgrade.

For a community like Lake City, that kind of investment could change the future of its athletic facilities.

## A Stadium That Has Given Generations of Tigers a Home

For more than three decades, Columbia's stadium has served as a gathering place for the Lake City community.

It has hosted Friday night football games, graduation ceremonies, and countless moments that families carry with them long after students leave campus.

But the facility is showing its age.

According to school officials interviewed by News4JAX, the stadium has not undergone major renovations in approximately 30 years.

Drainage problems have become serious enough to force the relocation of a football game this season. Stadium lighting also needs attention, and limited school funding has made major improvements difficult.

These aren't merely cosmetic concerns.

Field conditions, lighting, and infrastructure affect the experience of athletes, coaches, students, and the families who fill the stands every Friday night.

The opportunity to secure significant outside funding could allow Columbia to address needs that might otherwise take years to resolve.

## Football Is More Than a Game

At Sanchez Sideline, we believe the most important stories in sports aren't always found on a scoreboard.

Sometimes they're found in the relationships built inside a locker room, the lessons learned during a difficult season, or the coach who sees potential in a young person before that young person sees it in themselves.

Football can provide structure, mentorship, accountability, and a sense of belonging.

For some students, those experiences become the foundation for everything that follows.

That's part of what makes Columbia's campaign so meaningful.

The Tigers aren't simply asking the public to help improve a stadium. They're asking people to invest in a place where young athletes develop discipline, build friendships, and represent their community.

And the benefits extend beyond football.

The stadium also supports other school activities, including track and field, graduations, and community gatherings.

An investment in Columbia's facilities is an investment in the broader student experience.

## A Community Calling on Another Community

Sanchez Sideline first learned about Columbia's push when Janette, a sports parent and proud Columbia High School supporter, reached out to our publication.

Her message was simple: the Tigers need help spreading the word.

She described football as a place where young people can discover mentorship, purpose, family, and sometimes a lifeline.

That message deserves attention.

High school athletic programs often depend on families, alumni, volunteers, and community supporters who give their time and energy because they believe in what those programs mean to young people.

Janette's outreach is another example of that commitment.

And now Columbia's supporters are asking football fans across Florida, Georgia, and beyond to join their effort.

You don't have to be a Columbia graduate.

You don't have to live in Lake City.

You don't even have to be a Tigers fan.

You simply have to believe that young people deserve opportunities and facilities that help them thrive.

## October 23: A Homecoming Celebration With Bigger Stakes

Friday, October 23, is shaping up to be an important night for Columbia High School.

T-Mobile is scheduled to visit the campus for a Home Game Celebration, where the school will be recognized for reaching the national Top 40 and presented with its $25,000 award.

The event comes during Columbia's homecoming festivities, giving the school an opportunity to showcase its pride while encouraging supporters to keep voting.

But the celebration isn't the finish line.

Two days later, voting closes for the divisional round.

If Columbia receives the most votes in the South Division, the Tigers will advance to the national final four.

Division champions are scheduled to be announced October 29.

The final voting period runs October 29 through November 8, with the $1 million grand prize winner scheduled to be announced November 12.

## The Final Whistle: This Is Bigger Than Columbia

At Sanchez Sideline, our coverage stretches across Florida and Georgia because we believe local sports stories deserve a bigger platform.

A high school in Lake City competing for a million-dollar investment is exactly the kind of story that reminds us why community sports matter.

The Tigers have already accomplished something significant by reaching the national Top 40.

Now they're trying to turn that opportunity into a lasting legacy.

A renovated stadium won't guarantee championships.

It won't automatically produce the next college football star.

But it can create an environment where student-athletes feel supported, where families can gather with pride, and where future generations of Tigers can make memories of their own.

And that's worth rallying behind.

**Florida. Georgia. Football families everywhere. Columbia High School needs your support.**

The Tigers have until October 25 to win their division.

Let's help make sure their story is heard.
