## TWO QUARTERBACKS. TWO DIFFERENT STORIES. ONE CITY WATCHING.

SARASOTA, Fla. — Forget the rankings for a moment. Forget the records. Forget everything that happened in this rivalry before either of these quarterbacks was old enough to understand what it meant.

Friday night is about the next chapter.

And standing at the center of it are two quarterbacks who have spent the 2026 season giving opposing defenses plenty to worry about.

On one sideline stands **Hudson West**, Sarasota's junior quarterback, a 6-foot-4 passer with the production to put points on the scoreboard and the opportunity to deliver something the Sailors haven't experienced since 2011: a victory over Riverview.

Across the field stands **Logan Carrillo**, Riverview's senior signal-caller, a quarterback who waited patiently for his opportunity and responded by breaking school passing records in his first season as the Rams' full-time starter.

West is building his legacy.

Carrillo is making the most of his final high school season.

And both are coming off performances that remind everyone why this quarterback matchup deserves its own spotlight.

West threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns in Sarasota's dramatic 44–43 overtime victory over Lakewood Ranch.

Carrillo answered with 366 passing yards and three touchdowns in Riverview's 41–32 loss to Venice.

Different results. Similar message.

**Both quarterbacks can flat-out play.**

And when the Rams and Sailors meet at Cleland Stadium on Friday, October 23, both will carry considerably more than their offenses into the matchup.

One is trying to end a streak.

The other is trying to protect it.

Neither can accomplish his mission alone.

## BY THE NUMBERS: WEST VS. CARRILLO

Before breaking down their individual strengths, consider what both quarterbacks have accomplished through eight games this season.

*Statistical note: These are calculated eight-game totals using MaxPreps' previously reported seven-game statistics and the October 16 game performances. Carrillo's Venice statistics follow the Sarasota Observer's detailed report. West's updated completion and attempt totals remain unconfirmed.*

At first glance, West owns the advantage in passing yards and touchdown passes.

The Sarasota junior has accumulated 2,450 passing yards and 30 touchdowns, averaging more than 300 passing yards per game.

Carrillo, however, has been remarkably efficient, producing 2,047 yards and 25 touchdowns while completing approximately 67 percent of his passes.

Together, the two quarterbacks have accounted for **4,497 passing yards and 55 touchdowns**.

Read that again.

Nearly 4,500 passing yards and 55 touchdowns between two quarterbacks preparing to face each other in one of Sarasota County's longest-running rivalries.

West has handled a larger passing workload while demonstrating the ability to limit turnovers.

Carrillo has shown he can generate explosive production and move the football quickly.

Those numbers suggest two different offensive approaches, but they also reveal something the statistics cannot fully explain.

Both quarterbacks know how to move the football.

And both have demonstrated the ability to make defenses pay for mistakes.

## HUDSON WEST: THE QUARTERBACK TRYING TO CHANGE SARASOTA'S STORY

There's something different about being the quarterback of a team trying to end a rivalry losing streak.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/dd/cc/ddcc24fb-86d0-4ee3-b21e-75f1e2d638ec/content/images/2026/10/hudson-west-graphic.png)

Every mistake feels bigger. Every missed opportunity carries additional weight. And every touchdown offers another reason to believe this might finally be the year.

That's the situation facing Hudson West.

And if his most recent performance is any indication, the Sarasota junior isn't backing away from the moment.

On October 16, West delivered one of his most impressive outings of the season, throwing for **453 yards and five touchdowns** in Sarasota's 44–43 overtime victory over Lakewood Ranch.

It was the kind of performance that demonstrates what West is capable of when Sarasota's passing attack finds its rhythm.

The Sailors needed every bit of that production to survive a game that featured 87 combined points.

More importantly, Sarasota found a way to finish.

That matters heading into a rivalry matchup against a program the Sailors haven't beaten since 2011.

West's latest performance also continued an impressive individual streak. According to MaxPreps, he has now thrown at least two touchdown passes in nine consecutive games dating back to last season.

Through eight games in 2026, his calculated totals stand at 2,450 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and three interceptions.

At 6-foot-4, West brings the height and passing production that make him an intriguing quarterback prospect.

But one of the most impressive aspects of his statistical résumé is his ability to protect the football.

Even with the volume of passes he's been asked to throw, West has recorded only three interceptions in the eight-game statistical sample.

For a quarterback responsible for that much offensive production, ball security has been a significant part of his success.

And Sarasota will need every bit of that discipline Friday.

Against Riverview, possessions matter.

The Rams have spent years controlling this rivalry, and giving them additional opportunities through turnovers is a dangerous proposition.

West's challenge will be balancing aggression with patience.

He needs to attack when opportunities present themselves, but he cannot allow the emotion of the rivalry to dictate his decisions.

### The weapons around West

A quarterback's production never happens in isolation.

Junior wide receiver **Evan Larrick** has emerged as a notable target in Sarasota's passing attack. Against Palm Beach Lakes earlier this season, Larrick recorded seven receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Senior **Jayden Rivers** and junior **Julian Wilcom** provide additional receiving options, giving West multiple targets capable of contributing to Sarasota's offensive production.

**Cameron Houston** has also provided offensive versatility. In Sarasota's October 9 victory over Lehigh, Houston contributed 146 total yards and three touchdowns.

Sophomore running back **Darrell Yarborough** adds another option in the backfield.

That kind of support matters against an opponent capable of scoring quickly.

If Sarasota can establish multiple offensive threats, West won't have to carry every possession on his shoulders.

But make no mistake: the Sailors' chances of ending their rivalry drought will be closely tied to how effectively their quarterback handles the moment.

## LOGAN CARRILLO: THE WAIT WAS LONG. THE BREAKTHROUGH WAS WORTH IT.

Some quarterbacks become starters the moment they arrive on campus.

Others have to wait.

Logan Carrillo belongs to the second group.

Before becoming Riverview's starting quarterback in 2026, Carrillo spent his sophomore and junior seasons learning behind other players, preparing for an opportunity that was never guaranteed.

He could have grown frustrated.

He could have decided that waiting wasn't worth it.

Instead, he kept working.

And when his opportunity finally arrived, he made it count.

Carrillo opened the season by throwing for 364 yards against Naples, setting a Riverview single-game passing record.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/dd/cc/ddcc24fb-86d0-4ee3-b21e-75f1e2d638ec/content/images/2026/10/logan-carillo-graphic.png)

Weeks later, against North Port, he surpassed the school's single-season passing touchdown record.

And the senior hasn't slowed down.

On October 16, Carrillo completed 24 of 39 passes for 366 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception against Venice.

The Rams ultimately fell 41–32, but the loss wasn't because their quarterback couldn't produce.

Carrillo kept Riverview's passing attack dangerous against a Venice team that entered the following week with an 8–1 record.

Senior receiver Trenton Huffman contributed nine receptions for 159 yards and a touchdown, giving Carrillo a reliable target throughout the matchup.

It wasn't the result Riverview wanted.

But it was another reminder of the quarterback Carrillo has become.

Through eight games, his calculated totals stand at 2,047 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and four interceptions.

For a first-year starter, that's an impressive résumé.

For a senior who waited years to lead his team, it's the kind of season that makes the patience worthwhile.

### Efficiency is Carrillo's calling card

What separates Carrillo statistically is how much production Riverview generates from his passing opportunities.

Through eight games, he has completed 101 of 150 passes, a 67.3 percent completion rate.

His 2,047 yards translate to approximately 20.3 yards per completion.

That's explosive production.

It means opposing defenses cannot simply worry about preventing long drives. They must also account for Riverview's ability to generate significant yardage through individual passing plays.

Against Sarasota, that creates a difficult defensive challenge.

Play too aggressively, and Carrillo may find opportunities downfield.

Give his receivers too much room, and the Rams can potentially move the chains without needing a spectacular throw.

The key for Carrillo will be continuing to make sound decisions while avoiding the temptation to force big plays.

Riverview's offense has demonstrated that it can be productive without abandoning patience.

### The weapons around Carrillo

Carrillo has the luxury of throwing to an experienced group of offensive playmakers.

Senior wide receivers **Trenton Huffman** and **Imari Thomas** give Riverview multiple receiving threats capable of stretching the field and creating difficult matchups for opposing defensive backs.

Huffman demonstrated his importance against Venice, finishing with 159 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Senior tight end **Miles Przekwas** provides another option, particularly when Riverview needs a physical presence in its passing attack.

The Rams also have experienced contributors in the backfield, including **Michael Peterson** and **Gabe Halperin**.

That balance makes Carrillo's job easier.

Defenses cannot simply focus on one receiver or one type of offensive play.

When the Rams establish their running game and force opponents to respect multiple receiving threats, Carrillo becomes even more dangerous.

### The Brody Wiseman connection

Carrillo's development also brings another compelling storyline into this week's matchup.

Riverview coach **Brody Wiseman** has been part of the coaching environment surrounding the senior's breakthrough season.

Wiseman previously coached at Sarasota, meaning Friday's matchup brings him against a program where he once worked.

His experience developing athletes and mentoring younger coaches adds another dimension to a rivalry already filled with personal connections.

For Carrillo, Friday offers another opportunity to demonstrate his preparation under pressure.

For Wiseman, the matchup brings together two programs that have been part of his coaching journey.

Sanchez Sideline will explore Wiseman's coaching history, leadership philosophy, and approach to mentorship in our inaugural Coach Spotlight feature.

## THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRODUCTION AND EFFICIENCY

It's tempting to look at the numbers and declare a winner.

West has more passing yards.

Carrillo has demonstrated outstanding efficiency.

West has more touchdowns.

Carrillo has shown the ability to produce explosive plays with fewer attempts.

But football isn't decided by statistical comparisons.

It's decided by matchups, execution, and how players respond when the game stops going according to plan.

West has demonstrated the ability to handle a high-volume passing workload while limiting interceptions.

Carrillo has shown he can generate explosive production without needing an overwhelming number of passing attempts.

Both approaches can win football games.

And both quarterbacks are entering Friday with something to prove.

Sarasota is coming off an emotional overtime victory over Lakewood Ranch.

Riverview is coming off a difficult loss to Venice.

West wants to keep the Sailors moving forward.

Carrillo wants to help the Rams respond.

The question Friday will be which approach proves more effective against the opposing defense.

And perhaps more importantly, which quarterback can adjust when the original game plan stops working?

## FIVE THINGS THAT COULD DECIDE THE QUARTERBACK BATTLE

### 1\. Protecting the football

West and Carrillo have combined for 55 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in their eight-game statistical samples.

That's impressive production from two quarterbacks who have been asked to carry significant offensive responsibilities.

But Friday's matchup won't be decided by how well either quarterback protected the football in September.

It will be decided by what happens against the opposing defense.

One interception, one poorly timed throw, or one lost possession could determine whether Sarasota finally breaks its losing streak or Riverview extends its dominance.

### 2\. Handling defensive pressure

Both quarterbacks have demonstrated their ability to produce when given opportunities.

Friday's test will include how quickly they identify pressure, recognize coverage changes, and make decisions when the pocket becomes uncomfortable.

For Sarasota, protecting West will be especially important against Riverview's defensive front.

For Riverview, keeping Carrillo comfortable will allow the Rams to take advantage of their experienced receiving corps.

### 3\. Explosive plays

Both quarterbacks are capable of changing the game with one throw.

West's 453-yard performance against Lakewood Ranch demonstrated his ability to produce significant yardage when Sarasota needs offense.

Carrillo's 366-yard outing against Venice showed that Riverview can remain dangerous even against strong competition.

The defense that limits explosive plays may give its team the biggest advantage.

### 4\. Third-down execution

Long passing plays make headlines, but sustaining drives matters just as much.

Converting third downs, managing manageable distances, and avoiding unnecessary penalties will be critical for both offenses.

Neither team wants to give the opposing quarterback additional possessions.

And in a rivalry game, controlling the football can be just as important as moving it quickly.

### 5\. Responding to adversity

Rivalry games rarely unfold exactly as expected.

A missed throw, an early turnover, or a sudden momentum swing can change the atmosphere quickly.

Both quarterbacks experienced adversity in their most recent games.

West helped Sarasota survive a one-point overtime thriller.

Carrillo continued producing despite Riverview's loss to Venice.

Those experiences could prove valuable Friday.

The quarterback who responds with composure may ultimately make the biggest difference.

## WHAT FRIDAY MEANS FOR HUDSON WEST

For West, Friday presents an opportunity that extends beyond his individual statistics.

Sarasota hasn't defeated Riverview since 2011.

A victory would give this Sailors team a place in local football history and provide a defining moment in West's junior season.

But trying to win fifteen years' worth of games in one night would be a mistake.

West doesn't need to erase every loss that came before him.

He needs to lead his team through four quarters.

Make the right reads.

Protect the football.

Trust his teammates.

And give Sarasota an opportunity to finish.

The Sailors have already shown they can survive a close game.

Their 44–43 overtime victory over Lakewood Ranch provided evidence that this team can respond when the pressure rises.

Now comes a different challenge.

Can Sarasota deliver that same composure against the opponent that has dominated this rivalry for more than a decade?

If West can help make that happen, the historical significance will take care of itself.

## WHAT FRIDAY MEANS FOR LOGAN CARRILLO

Carrillo's situation is different.

He's a senior enjoying the kind of season he spent years preparing for.

He has already broken school records and established himself as a productive starting quarterback.

But Riverview's recent loss to Venice means the Rams enter this rivalry matchup looking to respond.

For Carrillo, Friday offers an opportunity to demonstrate that his team's offensive success can continue against a motivated cross-town opponent.

It also offers another chance to add to Riverview's rivalry legacy.

The Rams have won this matchup year after year.

But Carrillo understands that the players who built that streak won't be the ones taking snaps Friday.

That's his responsibility now.

Records are impressive.

Winning a rivalry game in your final high school season is something different.

And Carrillo has an opportunity to do both.

## THE SANCHEZ SIDELINE VERDICT: THIS IS BIGGER THAN A STAT SHEET

Hudson West versus Logan Carrillo isn't simply a matchup between two quarterbacks putting up impressive numbers.

It's a collision of circumstances.

One quarterback represents a program desperate to end a long losing streak.

The other represents a program determined to keep its dominance intact.

One is a junior with another high school season ahead.

The other is a senior who waited for his moment and is determined to make the most of it.

And both are entering Friday after performances that demonstrated exactly why their teams depend on them.

West threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns in a thrilling overtime victory.

Carrillo threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns against one of the area's toughest opponents.

Neither performance guarantees anything Friday.

But both offer a glimpse of what could happen when these quarterbacks take the field.

Together, they've accounted for nearly 4,500 passing yards and 55 touchdowns through eight games.

Those numbers deserve attention.

But the final score will matter more than anything printed on a statistical leaderboard.

**West has the opportunity to change Sarasota's history.**

**Carrillo has the opportunity to extend Riverview's legacy.**

Only one team will leave Cleland Stadium with the victory.

But both quarterbacks have the opportunity to deliver a performance Sarasota football fans will remember.

**Two quarterbacks. One rivalry. Everything on the line.**
