The Utah Jazz’s Ace in the Hole, or a Roll of the Dice?

The 2025 NBA Draft has come and gone, and the reverberations are still being felt across the league. While many selections were met with predictable sighs or cheers, one pick continues to ignite heated debates: the Utah Jazz’s decision to take Rutgers freshman guard/forward Ace Bailey with he 5th overall selection.

Even before draft night, Bailey was arguably the most polarizing prospect in the class. His electrifying athleticism and ability to create his own shot were undeniable, but so were questions about his unconventional shot selection and reported reluctance to work out for certain teams. Now, as he dons the Jazz’s iconic purple and gold, the controversy takes on a new dimension.

The initial buzz around the Jazz’s pick wasn’t just about Bailey’s on-court fit, but also the whispers that he wasn’t keen on playing in Utah. Reports surfaced that his camp had communicated to some top-five teams that Utah wasn’t a “preferred destination.” Yet, the Jazz, led by Austin Ainge, still pulled the trigger, clearly believing in Bailey’s immense potential. Post-draft, Bailey has seemingly embraced his new home, even changing his jersey number from his familiar No. 4 (retired for Adrian Darnley) to No. 19, a subtle but perhaps meaningful gesture.

So, why the continued controversy? It boils down to a few key areas:

  • The “Bad Shot” Debate: Bailey’s confidence in his contested jumpers was a hallmark of his freshman season at Rutgers, where he averaged 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game. He hit nearly half of his guarded attempts (48.1 %) but struggled on unguarded ones (30.3%). Can the Jazz coaching staff rein in his shot selection without stifling his unique offensive talent? Or will they empower him to continue taking those “tough” shots at the NBA level, and will they fall consistently?

  • Measurements vs. Playstyle: The pre-draft talk about his height (6’7.5” barefoot despite being listed at 6’10”) will likely persist. How will a team built on defensive versatility and multi-positional players utilize a wing who has played bigger than his measurements suggest but whose best offensive attribute might be contested isolation scoring?

  • Fit in the Jazz System: The Jazz are in a rebuilding phase, aiming to cultivate a strong core. How does Bailey, a high-usage offensive player, integrate with existing young talent? Does he complement or potentially duplicate skills already on the roster? His ability to impact the game on both ends, which Austin Ainge highlighted, will be crucial.

  • The Pressure of the Pick: Being the #5 overall pick in any draft comes with immense pressure. Given the pre-draft narratives, every single play, every stat line, and every interview will be scrutinized under a magnifying glass.

The Utah Jazz clearly believe they’ve landed a cornerstone piece in Ace Bailey, gambling on his sky-high ceiling despite the red flags. Whether he becomes the franchise player they envision or if the lingering questions prove to be more than just pre-draft noise will be one of the most compelling storylines to follow in the coming seasons. The ball, and the spotlight, are now firmly in Ace Bailey’s court. Signing off from the edge of my seat. Remember, in sports and in life, sometimes you just gotta take the shot. Sanchez, out!
