Backcourt Nightmares and Local Legends: Scott Cross is Building a Juggernaut on The Flats

Backcourt Nightmares and Local Legends: Scott Cross is Building a Juggernaut on The Flats

If you thought Georgia Tech was just going to sit back and play nice in the ACC, think again. Head coach Scott Cross is officially on a tear, assembling a 2026-27 roster that looks less like a rebuilding project and more like a tactical assault.

The "Zero Filter" truth? Cross isn't just looking for bodies; he’s hunting for efficiency and "OKGs" (Our Kind of Guys). From Mountain West scoring machines to local four-star prodigies, the Yellow Jackets are loading up on length, skill, and pure, unadulterated grit.

The "Nightmare" Backcourt: Colby Garland & Nasir Whitlock

Coach Cross is already calling it: this will be one of the best backcourts in the ACC.

  • Colby Garland (San Jose State): This kid is a certified bucket. He finished last season with 12 straight 20-plus point games—the longest streak at SJSU since the late 90s. He’s an efficient nightmare who shot nearly 50% from the floor while averaging 20.3 PPG.

  • Nasir "Naz" Whitlock (Lehigh): If Garland is the nightmare, Whitlock is the recurring dream. The Patriot League Player of the Year and Tournament MVP averaged 20.5 PPG and led Lehigh back to the Big Dance for the first time since 2012. He’s a 30-point threat every time he laces them up.

Sanchez’s Take: Getting two 20-PPG scorers in the same transfer class is highway robbery. Cross told fans to "get your popcorn ready," and he isn't kidding. These two are going to be a headache for every defensive coordinator from Durham to Charlottesville.

The "Point Forward" Vision: Victor Valdés

At 6-7, Victor Valdés brings the international flair and championship pedigree Cross craves. Coming off back-to-back Sun Belt titles at Troy, Valdés is a position-less weapon with the vision of a point guard. Last year, he led the Trojans in scoring and assists, proving he can create for himself as easily as he can dish it.

The Homecoming Kings: Tylis Jordan & Moustapha Diop

Cross is keeping the best talent right here in the A.

  • Tylis Jordan (Ole Miss): A 6-9 former four-star recruit who won a State Title at Wheeler High. After redshirting at Ole Miss, he brings four years of eligibility and a "position-less" game that allows him to guard all five spots.

  • Moustapha Diop (Overtime Elite): Standing 6-10 with a 7-2 wingspan, Diop is the rim-runner the Jackets have been starving for. He’s a lob threat who flourished just down the street at OTE, and he’s ready to turn McCamish Pavilion into a block party.

The "OKG": Kaiden Bailey

Rounding out the class is Kaiden Bailey, a top-125 recruit who Cross identified immediately as "Our Kind of Guy." Bailey is a strong-bodied guard who can stroke the three and has the "poise and IQ" to run an ACC offense as a freshman.

Sanchez’s Take: This isn't just a collection of talent; it's a collection of winners. Cross is pulling guys who have led their teams to NCAA Tournament berths and State Championships. He’s building a team that can pass, dribble, and shoot at every single position. The ACC has been warned—The Flats are about to get really noisy.

With two elite 20-point scorers in Garland and Whitlock joining forces, who do you think emerges as the "Alpha" in this backcourt, or will the Jackets' success depend on them being a 1A/1B punch?
