The Big Man’s Breath and Izzo’s Stair-Stepper Marathon

WASHINGTON — If you enjoy watching a high-stakes basketball game turn into a breathing exercise workshop, then Friday night’s UConn vs. Michigan State showdown was your Super Bowl. The Huskies fended off a relentless Michigan State comeback to win 67-63, proving that sometimes the most dangerous weapon in college hoops isn't a 30-foot jumper—it's a 59% free-throw shooter who finally decided to trust his lungs.

The man of the hour was Tarris Reed Jr., a big man whose previous relationship with the charity stripe could best be described as "it’s complicated." But with the season on the line and Dan Hurley likely vibrating at a frequency only visible to migratory birds, Reed channeled his inner Zen. He sank four straight pressure-packed free throws in the final minute, finishing with 20 points and zero missed breaths.

The Hurley-Karaban Power Dynamic

While Reed was busy being the hero, Alex Karaban (17 points) was busy being the "Associate Head Coach/Roommate/Enforcer."

Coach Dan Hurley, in a rare moment of self-awareness that almost caused a rift in the space-time continuum, called Karaban his "calming influence."

“I’m waiting for you to laugh,” Hurley told reporters.

He wasn't wrong. Having Karaban on the floor is apparently like having a top assistant coach who also lives in the dorms and peer-pressures the team into doing extra lunges. It’s "Associate Head Coach" vibes with "Elite Eight" results.

The Sparty Slog

Tom Izzo and his Spartans spent the first ten minutes of the game looking like they’d accidentally wandered into a hurricane, falling behind 25-6. Most teams would have checked their flight status for East Lansing by halftime, but Michigan State decided to turn the game into a gritty, 40-minute stair-stepper workout.

They clawed all the way back to take a lead in the second half, led by Jaxon Kohler and Jeremy Fears Jr., but ultimately the Spartans' three-point shooting (a frigid 4-of-16) had all the warmth of a Michigan February.

“We just kind of wore down,” Izzo said after the game.

Fair enough, Tom. Chasing Hurley’s Huskies for 40 minutes is legally classified as a cardio-respiratory endurance test.

By the Numbers:

  • 19 Points: The deficit Michigan State erased just to remind everyone that Tom Izzo doesn't believe in easy exits.

  • 4-for-4: Tarris Reed Jr.’s free throw stats in the clutch. Somewhere, a sports psychologist is getting a massive Christmas bonus.

  • 3 Minutes: The total playing time for the returning Jaylin Stewart, who showed up, drained a three, and then presumably went back to icing his knee like a boss.

Next Up: It’s a literal "Heavyweight Clash" on Sunday. UConn vs. Duke. The East Region final. Get your popcorn and your blood pressure medication ready—it’s going to be a long weekend in D.C.
