The "James" Long Game - Bryce James Redshirt

If you were hoping to see a "James" jersey flying through the air in Tucson this winter, I hope you’re comfortable in a waiting room. Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd hopped on The Big 12 Network Tuesday to announce that Bryce James—the youngest heir to the LeBron throne—will be spending the season in the collegiate version of "Carbonite."

That’s right: Arizona is redshirting Bryce James.

The "Long Play" (Or, The Art of Maturation)

Coach Lloyd described the move as a "long play," which is coaching-speak for "he’s not ready to bang with 23-year-old Serbian centers quite yet." Lloyd insists that Bryce is making progress in "physically maturing," which we can only assume involves a lot of protein shakes and trying to figure out how his dad is still playing in the NBA while he’s technically a student-athlete.

Let’s be real: Bryce wasn’t exactly expected to be the savior of the desert this year. Ranked 324th in the 2025 class, he arrived at Arizona with a legendary last name and a scouting report that mostly said, "Wait and see." While his dad is busy chasing another ring and his brother, Bronny, is out in the pro world, Bryce will be spending his Saturdays at Arizona working on his jumper and learning where the best burritos are on campus.

The Great Wildcat Exodus

The timing of this "patience" is actually quite strategic. The 22-0 Wildcats are currently a buzzsaw, but that saw is about to lose a lot of teeth:

  • Three seniors are graduating (hopefully into jobs that pay better than NIL).

  • Brayden Burries and Koa Peat, the team’s leading scorers, are basically already checking Zillow for apartments in NBA cities.

By the time the 2026 season rolls around, the Arizona roster will be looking a bit thin—mostly just Ivan Kharchenkov, Dwayne Aristode, and Motiejus Krivas (a name that sounds like a spell from Harry Potter).

The Desert Reset

With four-star commit Cameron Holmes on the way and Tommy Lloyd likely scouring the transfer portal and every corner of Europe for more perimeter depth, the 2026-27 season is shaping up to be the "Bryce James Reveal Party."

Lloyd believes Bryce will be a "contributor in the near future." For now, that contribution mostly involves being the most famous person on the practice squad and having a front-row seat to a potential undefeated season.

It’s a bold strategy. While most freshmen are worried about midterms, Bryce is focused on a 2026 debut. If he inherits even 10% of the "James" longevity, he’ll still be playing basketball when we’re all living on Mars.
