The Omaha Heartbreaker

If you were looking for a relaxing Wednesday evening, Omaha was not the place to be. The Georgetown Hoyas traveled to Nebraska for a BIG EAST showdown with the Creighton Bluejays that didn’t just go down to the wire—it basically lived there.

In a back-and-forth thriller at D.J. Sokol Arena, Georgetown (12-11, 5-9 BIG EAST) fell just short in a 64-62 loss. It was a game of runs, triples, and a final possession that felt like it lasted an eternity.

The Gessert & Boffeli Show

While the Hoyas brought plenty of firepower, they ran into a buzzsaw named Neleigh Gessert. The Creighton freshman was unconscious, dropping a career-high 31 points to lead all scorers. But even with Gessert’s scoring barrage, it was senior Grace Boffeli who delivered the dagger, securing the game-winning layup with just 2.1 seconds remaining on her birthday. Talk about a "gift" the Hoyas didn't want to give.

The Destiny & Brianna Duo

Georgetown didn't go down without a fight. Sophomore Destiny Agubata played like a woman possessed, putting up 21 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. She was the engine that kept the Hoyas in it, especially during a massive 12-2 second-quarter run that briefly gave Georgetown the lead.

Graduate student Brianna Scott also showed out, chipping in 17 points and keeping the Jays honest in the paint and from deep. When Brianna Byars buried a three-pointer with just 1:40 left to put the Hoyas up 62-60, it looked like Georgetown was going to pull off the road heist. Unfortunately, Creighton found one last gear, answering with a layup before Boffeli’s last-second heroics.

The "Of Note" Department

  • The Shooting: Georgetown shot a respectable 39.7%, but they allowed Creighton to hit 46.4% from the field. In a two-point game, that difference is the whole story.

  • The Glass: The Bluejays outrebounded the Hoyas 38-31, which is always a tough pill to swallow when you're fighting for second-chance points.

  • The Turnover Battle: The Blue & Gray defense was active, forcing 13 turnovers on seven steals, proving they can disrupt even the hottest shooting teams.

UP NEXT

The Hoyas are staying on the road for another high-stakes BIG EAST battle. They head to Pennsylvania this Saturday, Feb. 7, to face the Villanova Wildcats at 2 p.m. Villanova is currently 18-5 and sitting near the top of the conference, so the Hoyas will need to find that Omaha energy again—just with a slightly different ending.
