Strong Performs, Huskies Storm
STORRS, Conn. — In a rivalry defined by buzzer-beaters and overtime thrillers, Monday afternoon offered something entirely different: total domination.
The top-ranked UConn Huskies (19-0) delivered a resounding statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, dismantling longtime rival Notre Dame 85-47 at Gampel Pavilion. The 38-point drubbing marked the largest margin of victory in the 56-game history of the series, snapping the Fighting Irish's three-game winning streak against the Huskies in emphatic fashion.
While the defense suffocated the Irish, the spotlight belonged to sophomore sensation Sarah Strong, who etched her name into the history books on an otherwise routine Monday in Storrs.
Strong’s Milestone Night
Sarah Strong entered the game on the cusp of a major career achievement, and she didn’t waste time getting there. With 7:31 remaining in the first half, Strong drained a 3-pointer to record the 1,000th point of her career.
The sophomore forward finished with a masterclass stat line:
18 Points (8-of-12 shooting)
11 Rebounds
3 Assists, 3 Steals, 3 Blocks
Historically, Strong’s ascent has been meteoric. She reached the 1,000-point plateau in just 59 games—the third-fastest in program history, trailing only legends Paige Bueckers and Maya Moore. Perhaps even more impressive, per The Ringer, Strong achieved the milestone on just 711 shot attempts, the fewest shots required by any Division I women’s basketball player in history.
The Arnold vs. Hidalgo Matchup
The narrative coming into the game centered on Notre Dame star Hannah Hidalgo, who had averaged 31.5 points in her last two outings against UConn.
Enter KK Arnold.
Drawing the primary defensive assignment, Arnold spearheaded a defensive clinic that held the high-scoring Irish guard in check. Hidalgo, currently third in the nation in scoring (25 ppg), was held scoreless in the first quarter and finished with 16 points on a grueling 5-of-15 shooting.
Arnold wasn't just a stopper; she filled the box score with 12 points, five assists, and two steals, committing only one turnover.
"UConn’s defense was relentless," the report notes. The Huskies held Notre Dame to a dismal 1-for-16 (6%) from beyond the arc and just 37% from the field overall. Without Hidalgo taking over, the Irish offense collapsed; no other player scored more than 12 points (Cassandre Prosper).
Breaking it Open
Despite the final score, the game had moments of tension. After UConn jumped out to an early lead, Notre Dame managed to cut the deficit to single digits, trailing just 32-23 at halftime—becoming the first team this season to trail UConn by less than 10 at the break.
But the third quarter was a different story.
UConn exploded out of the locker room with a devastating 18-2 run, effectively ending the contest. The Huskies dominated the interior, winning the paint battle 44-24 and the rebounding war 39-24. They were also ruthless in transition, converting 15 Irish turnovers into 20 points.
Azzi Fudd contributed 15 points to the winning effort, while Ashlynn Shade added 10 points and four assists.
The Big Picture
This victory extends UConn's winning streak to 19 games this season and 35 consecutive games dating back to their 2025 National Championship run.
For Notre Dame (12-6), the loss compounds a difficult stretch. Having recently fallen out of the polls, the Irish looked outmatched without the transfers that have reshaped the landscape, leading many to wonder "what if" regarding former star Olivia Miles (now at TCU).
The rivalry lives on, but on this Monday, the gap between the nation's best team and their old foe looked wider than ever.
