SKY FALLING IN CHICAGO: Rickea Jackson Out for Season with Torn ACL

Hold onto your basketballs, folks, because the WNBA gods have officially decided the Chicago Sky were flying a little too close to the sun.

In a massive, heartbreaking blow to a team that was absolutely cruising, Chicago Sky forward Rickea Jackson has been diagnosed with a torn left ACL and will miss the remainder of the WNBA season.

The 25-year-old superstar-in-the-making went down during the first half of Sunday's 86-79 victory over the Minnesota Lynx after planting her left leg following a fierce drive to the rim. A Tuesday morning MRI confirmed the absolute worst-case scenario. Surgery is looming on a date to be determined, and just like that, a spectacular breakout campaign gets put on ice.

"We're devastated that Rickea suffered this injury, but we are confident she will make a full recovery," Sky General Manager Jeff Pagliocca said. "Rickea was playing at an All-Star and All-Defensive level early in the season. We are certain she was primed for a career year."

To say Jackson was thriving in her new home would be a massive understatement. After being acquired in an April blockbuster trade that sent Ariel Atkins to the Los Angeles Sparks, the former Tennessee standout was playing out of her mind.

Before going down on Sunday, Jackson wasn't just leading the Sky—she was putting the entire league on notice.

Look, let’s be real for a second—the Chicago Sky medical room is starting to look less like a professional training facility and more like a crowded hospital waiting room.

The Sky entered the season with a revamped, glittering roster featuring Jackson, Skylar Diggins, Gabriela Jaquez, and Natasha Cloud. They raced out to a spectacular 3-1 start, entirely on the road. But the wheels are being severely tested by the injury bug.

Chicago is already trying to navigate the season without three major pieces who have yet to even touch the floor this year:

  • Azura Stevens (Knee)

  • DiJonai Carrington (Foot)

  • Courtney Vandersloot (Knee)

Add in the fact that Skylar Diggins missed Sunday's game with an eye injury (though head coach Tyler Marsh says she’ll be back soon), and the Sky are running dangerously thin.

They are set to play their next four games at home, starting Wednesday night against Dallas. If they want to keep pace with the New York Liberty at the top of the standings, they are going to need Gabriela Jaquez (who stepped up with 20 points against Minnesota) and Natasha Cloud to carry an astronomical load.

Stay tuned to Sanchez Sideline as we watch how Chicago retools a roster that just lost its primary engine. Get well soon, Rickea!
