Someone check the water supply over on Circus Boulevard, because the Sarasota High Sailors aren’t just playing football right now—they’re running a weekly fireworks exhibition masquerading as high school athletics.

At 3-1, Sarasota is doing something rare and beautiful in prep sports: both the offense and defense decided to show up to the party at the exact same time. Under head coach Amp Campbell, the Sailors have rallied behind a foundational mantra: “We Don’t Build Football Players, We Build Men.”

Turns out, those men happen to be extraordinarily good at scoring touchdowns.

The Hudson West Experience

If you’re a defensive coordinator scheming against junior quarterback Hudson West right now, condolences to your blood pressure. West has already piled up over 1,000 passing yards, 1,000-plus total yards, and an eye-popping 15 total touchdowns through four games. He is treating opposing secondary units like minor traffic inconveniences.

Even in Sarasota’s lone blemish—a wild 58-47 shootout loss to Palm Beach Lakes where the scoreboard operator needed ice packs—West put up Madden numbers: 409 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, and another 72 yards and three scores on the ground.

When your quarterback accounts for seven touchdowns in a loss, you don’t blame the offense; you just politely ask the defense to tackle someone next time.

Message received.

Defense Joins the Party

Since that track meet against Palm Beach Lakes, the Sailors’ defense has locked the vault. Over their last eight quarters, Sarasota has outscored its opponents 98-13.

The Damage So Far

vs. Bayshore — W, 35-18

The Sailors controlled the tempo. Hudson West tossed three touchdowns, while Jayden Rivers added three total scores.

vs. Palm Beach Lakes — L, 58-47

Pure offensive chaos. West generated seven total touchdowns in a track meet.

vs. Hudson — W, 42-0

The defense pitched a donut. West completed 75 percent of his passes for 182 yards and four touchdowns.

vs. North Port — W, 56-13

Sarasota recorded its eighth straight win over the Bobcats while producing a season-high offensive output.

The 42-0 blanking of Hudson High proved the Sailors could clamp down when needed, and Thursday’s 56-13 thumping of North Port marked their eighth consecutive win over the Bobcats. At this point, Sarasota owning North Port is just an established civic ordinance.

With versatile playmakers like Jayden Rivers stretching the field and an offensive front opening up express lanes, Coach Campbell’s squad is playing balanced, aggressive football.

What’s Next

The Sailors get the luxury of staying parked right at home this Friday, September 18, when they welcome Parrish Community at 7:30 p.m.

If West keeps dealing and the defense keeps swarming, expect the scoreboard lights to stay hot.
