- Description: North Carolina says its investigation into Bill Belichick’s football program found isolated — not systemic — problems. But with Steve Belichick and Michael Lombardi gone and off-field issues mounting, Chapel Hill’s NFL-style experiment is facing plenty of questions.

**The “Carolina Way” has apparently been replaced by the “Cut the Sleeves Off and Plead the Fifth” Way.**

North Carolina has officially closed its investigation into Bill Belichick’s football program, concluding that certain actions showed a “disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct” — but were isolated rather than evidence of a systemic problem. ([ABC News](https://abcnews.com/Sports/wireStory/unc-defensive-coordinator-steve-belichick-resigns-probe-conduct-136529224?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com))

Translation: the house had some smoke. UNC just isn’t calling it a fire.

The investigation began as a personnel matter involving general manager Michael Lombardi before expanding into questions about conduct inside the football program. Reporting during the probe included allegations involving drug use and inappropriate relationships. And while the university says the matter is now resolved, Belichick’s original operation looks considerably different than it did a few weeks ago.

## Steve Belichick Is Out

Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has resigned. His departure becomes effective October 27, when his medical leave concludes. ([Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/sports/north-carolina-investigation-wraps-dc-steve-belichick-resigns-dad-stays-put--flm-2026-09-17/?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com))

His brother Brian Belichick, UNC’s safeties coach, has taken over defensive play-calling duties.

So yes, the Belichick family business remains open. There’s just been a change behind the counter.

## Michael Lombardi Already Left

Lombardi resigned as UNC’s general manager on September 3 after previously being placed on paid administrative leave. The longtime Bill Belichick confidant was one of the biggest hires in UNC’s attempt to build an NFL-style operation in Chapel Hill. ([The Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/2026/09/03/unc-football-michael-lombardi-belichick/778430a0-a7e3-11f1-9e38-f705d048bd5a%5Fstory.html?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com))

Now he’s gone, too.

## Investigation Closed. Details Limited.

UNC says the investigation is complete and that corrective actions have been taken, but the university has not released a detailed public report laying out everything investigators found. ([Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/sports/north-carolina-investigation-wraps-dc-steve-belichick-resigns-dad-stays-put--flm-2026-09-17/?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com))

That leaves plenty of unanswered questions for a program that spent the past month generating nearly as many off-field headlines as football ones.

And those headlines haven’t stopped.

Freshman wide receiver Keeyun Chapman has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed handgun following a traffic stop Tuesday. Teammate C.J. Sadler was cited for speeding — his third speeding citation since August — and both receivers are listed as out against Clemson. ([ABC11 Raleigh-Durham](https://abc11.com/post/2-unc-players-facing-charges-chapel-hill-traffic-stop/19841994/?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com))

Meanwhile, Bill Belichick remains the head coach.

No resignation. No announced discipline. Just Clemson next on the schedule.

North Carolina insists the problems uncovered by its investigation weren’t systemic. Maybe so. But when your general manager resigns, your defensive coordinator resigns, players keep appearing in off-field headlines and the university acknowledges conduct that violated its own standards, “isolated” starts doing a whole lot of work.

The grand experiment to turn Chapel Hill into college football’s version of an NFL franchise suddenly looks less like Foxborough South and more like appointment television.

But hey…

**The Tar Heels are 2-0.**

And apparently, the show must go on.
