Total Eclipse in the Twin Cities: Lynx Give Expansion Tempo a Brutal Reality Check

Total Eclipse in the Twin Cities: Lynx Give Expansion Tempo a Brutal Reality Check

MINNEAPOLIS — Welcome to the big leagues, Toronto.

The Toronto Tempo entered Thursday night riding the high of a two-game winning streak, looking like the kind of expansion team that might skip the awkward rebuilding phase entirely. The Minnesota Lynx, however, had other plans. In a clinical, top-to-bottom dismantling, the Lynx absolutely pulverized the newcomers 100-72, handing Toronto the first true blowout loss in their franchise history.

Before this match, Toronto’s only losses were by a combined seven points. Minnesota decided to increase that margin of defeat by an extra 21 points just to make sure the lesson stuck.

The Bench Mob Masterclass

You know your roster depth is elite when your leading scorer doesn’t even start the game. Reserve Maya Caldwell spearheaded a perfectly balanced Minnesota offense, dropping 16 points to lead five different Lynx players in double figures.

The structural integrity of the Lynx offense was beautiful to watch, contrasting sharply with a Toronto defense that looked like it was chasing ghosts:

  • Courtney Williams: 15 PTS (Pure efficiency).

  • Olivia Miles: 14 PTS (The rookie continues to look wise beyond her years).

  • Natasha Howard & Kayla McBride: 13 PTS each (Veteran composure at its finest).

The Lynx (3-2) spent the entire night playing bully-ball inside. They shot a scorching 55% from the field, thoroughly dominated the boards with a massive 46-25 rebounding advantage, and utterly humiliated Toronto in the painted area, outscoring them 42-24 in the box.

The Blueprint for Neutralizing Stars

If you want to know how the Lynx turned a professional basketball game into a track meet by the end of the first quarter, look no further than how they defensive-audited Toronto’s dynamic duo.

Brittney Sykes and Marina Mabrey came into Minneapolis averaging a combined 45+ points per game—both having casually dropped 30-pieces in a win over Phoenix last Sunday. The Lynx defense swarmed them from the opening tip, baiting both stars into two quick fouls each in the first quarter.

With Sykes and Mabrey handcuffed to the bench and held to a miserable nine points combined, the Tempo's offensive engine completely stalled.

Player/Metric The Expectations The Reality

Sykes & Mabrey Combined 45.0+ PPG 9 PTS (Foul Trouble Prison)

Tempo Team Field Goal % Competitive 34% (Yikes)

Tempo 3PT Shooting Heavy Volume 12-of-41 (29%)

The lone bright spot for the northern expansion team was Kia Nurse, who attempted to single-handedly save face by scoring 23 points off the bench, while rookie Kiki Rice chipped in 11. But when your starters are a combined no-show, bench heroics only get you so far.

Never a Doubt

This game was over almost as soon as it started. Minnesota closed out the opening frame on a 9-0 run to coast into a 27-14 lead. The second quarter was just more of the same painful geometry for Toronto, as the Lynx extended the cushion to 53-32 at halftime and never looked back. By the time the fourth quarter arrived, it was pure garbage time.

What's Next?

The expansion honeymoon is officially over for Toronto (3-3). They have to quickly wash the taste of this defeat out of their mouths as they fly home to host their fellow expansion siblings, the Portland team, on Saturday night.

As for the Lynx, they’ll put their over-.500 record on the line this Saturday when they travel to the Windy City to battle Chicago. If they keep shooting 55% from the floor, Chicago might want to look into an insurance policy.
