WNBA Wild West: Diggins-Smith Delivers Dagger as Dream

Alright, Folks, Sanchez reporting live from the Gateway Center Arena at College Park, where the Atlanta Dream just served up a heaping platter of heartbreak! If you had a ticket, you certainly got your money’s worth, even if your blood pressure is now somewhere in the stratosphere.

The Seattle Storm, led by none other than the clutch queen Skylar Diggins, pulled off an 80-79 nail-biter tonight, leaving the Dream faithful wondering if they should start taking up meditation.

From the jump, this was a back-and-forth affair, a true tug-of-war for 40 minutes. The Dream, bless their hearts, came out swinging, looking like they finally remembered what a basketball hoop was for after a few…shall we say, lackluster offensive performances this season. Nia Coffey was getting to the rim, and Crystal Dangerfield was dishing dimes like she was running a high-end jewelry store.

But Seattle, being Seattle, just wouldn’t quit. Nneka Ogwumike, who apparently sips from the fountain of youth before every game, was simply unstoppable. Seriously, how is she still this good? She was a force inside, grabbing boards and hitting those smooth mid-range jumpers that just scream, “Yeah, I’m still that player.”

The fourth quarter? Oh, honey, the fourth quarter was pure unadulterated chaos. Lead changes? More than my wardrobe changes in a week! We had big threes, questionable fouls (from both sides, let’s be real, the refs were earning their paychecks tonight), and enough missed free throws to make a coach pull their hair out.

With seconds ticking down, the Dream, down by one, had the ball. The crowd was absolutely deafening - you could feel the vibrations in your teeth! They ran a beautiful play, got a decent look…and it just rimmed out. And then, because basketball can be a cruel, cruel mistress, the Storm snagged the rebound, Skylar Diggins took it coast-to-coast, hit a contested layup, and just like that, the air went out of the arena.

The Dream got one last desperation heave, a prayer from half-court that looked good for a split second, then clanged off the backboard. Final score: Storm 80, Dream 79. My notes on the game are practically illegible from the sheer anxiety of it all!!

It was a tough loss for the Dream, especially at home, but they showed some serious fight. Now, if they could just figure out how to close out a game…that’d be great! Until next time…Signing off from the edge of my seat. Remember, in sports and in life, sometimes you just gotta take the shot. Sanchez, out!
