The WNBA vs. The Calculator
Deadline Drama: 9 Days Left
The clock is ticking toward the January 9 collective bargaining agreement deadline, and right now, the only thing the WNBA and the Players Association can agree on is that they disagree.
The WNBPA slid a proposal across the table asking for roughly 30% of gross revenue and a $10.5 million salary cap.
The League’s response? A polite version of "Are you trying to bankrupt us?"
Multiple sources tell ESPN that the WNBA projects this proposal would result in $700 million in losses over the life of the deal. To put that in perspective, the league claims that figure is higher than the combined losses of the WNBA and its teams over the last 29 years total.
The two sides remain "far apart" on basic concepts like what counts as revenue, how to count expenses, and generally how math works.
With the deadline looming, grab your popcorn. This negotiation is about to go into overtime.
