Wallet-Thinning in the West: Jokić and Randle Pay Up, But Stay In
Wallet-Thinning in the West: Jokić and Randle Pay Up, But Stay In
If you thought the Denver altitude was the only thing making people lightheaded, try watching the final 1.3 seconds of Game 4. The NBA office spent its Sunday writing "Don't Do It Again" notes and shaking down two of the league’s heavyweights for some serious lunch money.
The Damage Report
The league office has officially handed out the invoices following Saturday’s "Ball Arena Ballroom Brawl" (which was mostly just expensive shoving):
Nikola Jokić: Fined $50,000 for being the designated "Unwritten Rules Police."
Julius Randle: Fined $35,000 for his guest appearance in the scrum.
The good news for fans of drama (and actual basketball)? No suspensions. Both stars will be on the floor for Game 5, which is great because the Nuggets need Jokić like a stranded hiker needs a GPS—especially since they’re currently staring down a 3-1 series deficit.
The Layup That Launched a Thousand Shoves
Minnesota was already cruising to a 112-96 win, largely thanks to Ayo Dosunmu turning into a flamethrower off the bench. But with the game iced, Jaden McDaniels decided he hadn't quite filled his scoring quota. Instead of dribbling out the clock, he took an uncontested layup.
Jokić, a man who generally prefers his horse racing without unnecessary cardiovascular exercise, took exception to the etiquette breach. He confronted McDaniels, benches cleared, and suddenly we had more bodies on the floor than a Black Friday sale.
"The clock’s still be running, so, I’m about to go score," McDaniels said postgame, radiating the energy of a man who would definitely take the last slice of pizza without asking.
Bench Warmer Near-Misses
In a rare moment of NBA leniency, Aaron Gordon, Jonas Valančiūnas, Rudy Gobert, and Bones Hyland all avoided the "Automatic Suspension" trap. Despite wandering onto the court like confused tourists looking for the buffet, the league decided their proximity to the bench was "close enough" to avoid the banhammer.
Can the Nuggets Pull a 2020?
Denver is now tasked with the ultimate "Hold My Beer" challenge: overcoming a 3-1 deficit. They did it twice in the 2020 bubble, but this time they’re facing a Wolves team fueled by McDaniels' trash talk. Remember, this is the same McDaniels who recently called out half the Nuggets roster as "bad defenders."
He’s backed it up so far, helping Gobert hold the Joker to a frustrating 8-of-22 shooting night. If Denver wants to head back to Minneapolis, they’ll need Jokić to focus less on policing unwritten rules and more on rewriting the script of this series.
Game 5 kicks off Monday night in Denver. Bring your popcorn; leave your layup etiquette at the door.
