UConn to Dallas: Paige Bueckers Shuts Down the Rumor Mill at Wings Media Day

If you thought the Texas heat was the only thing rising in Arlington, you haven't been following the Dallas Wings’ media availability. On Monday afternoon, reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers decided she’d had enough of the off-court chatter, delivering a mic-drop statement regarding her relationship with former UConn teammate and current No. 1 overall pick Azzi Fudd.

Setting the Record Straight

Bueckers, never one to shy away from the spotlight, used the beginning of her press conference to address the viral narrative that has been following the two superstars since their days in Storrs. After confirming their relationship at the 2025 WNBA Draft, the noise has only gotten louder—especially after the Wings used the 2026 top pick to reunite the "Huskies of the South."

"Quite frankly, I believe me and Azzi’s personal relationship is nobody’s business but our own," Bueckers said with the poise of a seasoned vet. "We’ve never let anything that happens off the court carry onto the court, and that's what we'll continue to do."

Business as Usual

Bueckers was quick to remind the room that while the "back-to-back No. 1 picks" storyline is great for social media, it’s the basketball that matters. She emphasized that Fudd’s selection had everything to do with her career-high 17.1 PPG and 44.7% shooting from deep, and nothing to do with their personal connection.

The Wings’ PR team has already been on high alert, recently shutting down questions from the Dallas Morning News about the pair's TikTok announcements. The "viral narrative" has even spilled over to other teams, with Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner (currently engaged to teammate Alyssa Thomas) being grilled for advice for the young Dallas duo.

The New Dynasty?

The Wings are essentially "UConn West" at this point. After winning an NCAA title together during Bueckers’ final season, the pair is now tasked with reviving a Dallas franchise that has struggled to find postseason consistency.

Fudd comes off a stellar fifth year with the Huskies, despite a Final Four exit at the hands of South Carolina earlier this month. Now, the two most famous names in women’s basketball are officially teammates again.

Sanchez Sideline Take: Paige and Azzi are the ultimate "No-Look Pass" duo—they know exactly where the other is at all times. If they can translate that collegiate chemistry into WNBA wins, Dallas is going to be a problem for the rest of the league.

Next Up: The new-look Wings face their first real test in a road preseason opener against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever this Thursday, April 30.

Do you think the "UConn Connection" will be enough to propel the Wings into the top tier of the WNBA this season, or will the media circus become too much of a distraction for the young roster?
