More Bad News in Indianapolis
The Indiana Fever just can't seem to catch a break. The team announced Tuesday that veteran guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the rest of the 2025 season and the playoffs with a right knee injury. Cunningham, who was averaging career-best shooting numbers, went down in the second quarter of the Fever's comeback win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. She had been filling in at pseudo-point guard after season-ending injuries to both Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald on August 7.
To address the latest injury, the Fever signed veteran Shey Peddy, a 36-year-old guard who played six games for the Los Angeles Sparks earlier this season. This move comes after Indiana had already picked up another veteran, Odyssey Sims, on a hardship contract to help with their depleted backcourt.
The injuries couldn't come at a worse time. With nine games left, the Fever are in sixth place in the WNBA standings, 2 1/2 games ahead of the ninth-place Los Angeles Sparks. The team is still without Caitlin Clark, who has missed the last 13 games with a groin injury. While there was hope for her return to practice this week, her status remains uncertain. Adding to the challenge, the Fever have the toughest remaining schedule in the league, including three games against the top-ranked Minnesota Lynx.
Despite the parade of injuries, a few players are stepping up. All-Stars Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston are both having career years. Mitchell is averaging a career-high 20.4 points and 3.4 assists, while Boston is posting career-highs of 15.2 points and 3.6 assists. With so many players sidelined, Indiana will need even more from its stars to hold on to a playoff spot.
